The very last part of our Norway trip involved a 2 hour flight above the arctic circle to the town of Tromsø where an old Canadian friend of mine lives with his wife and dog. My friend Colin and I used to rock climb together when I was in my early 20’s in Penticton and, although both of us have had wonderfully adventurous lives up to this point and moved around a ton, we’ve kept in touch. Colin and his wife Mari live in a stunning home 25 minutes outside the town that they have spent the last couple of years building. Our first night there we had a delicious fish dinner at their home on the ocean, looking east towards the Lyngen Alps and waiting until the sun finally set around 11pm. TROMSØ SKI TOURING
The next day Colin and I loaded up backcountry ski touring (top tur) gear, and headed a couple of hours out of town to their other home at Lyngen Mountain Holidays. Colin and Mari recently founded the guiding company and bought a huge acreage with a farmhouse to use as the company’s home base and accommodation for skiers. After a day of touring in the sun we returned to the farmhouse with Mari for scotch, sauna and skinny dipping in the river. It was a pretty near to perfect day.
Our third day in Tromsø Sam and I chilled out, did some laundry, checked out the arctic museum and ate more amazing seafood. The final day saw more ski touring with Colin, Mari and their dog Nukka on another part of the island. Have I mentioned how cool it is to ski tour with a dog meant for the snow? She’s just amazing!
I admit I was a little choked up that night as I knew we were leaving in the morning and who knows when I would be able to come back and see my friends and family. What an amazing trip. Or maybe I just had one too many beers… 😉 TROMSØ SKI TOURING
